Migrant group: 500 feared dead after boat rammed

September 15, 2014 (Associate Press) — About 500 Syrians, Palestinians, Egyptians and Sudanese are feared to have died after their boat was rammed and sank off the Malta coast last week, the International Organization for Migration said Monday.

The group of migrant workers was undertaking a perilous journey from the Egyptian port of Damietta, seeking a better life in Europe, when their boat was overtaken by human traffickers equipped with two vessels on Wednesday, said organization spokeswoman Christiane Berthiaume. Read more…

Eighteen illegal immigrants from Ethiopia were Sunday arrested Kiutine, Igembe North, Meru County on their way to Nairobi. “The illegal aliens were nabbed at a road block at Kiutine at 8am, aboard 2 saloon cars. They were heading to Nairobi.

We will take them to court, together with their two drivers, both Kenyans,” said Cornelius Sing’oei, the Igembe North OCPD.  He said the immigrants who are between 18 to 26 years and all men and could not speak English. “We know there are people living in Meru who are financing and coordinating the illegal immigrants’ entry into Kenya.
We are continuing with the investigations, but the arrested will be arraigned in court immediately,” said Mr. Sing’oei “We encourage the members of the public to continue assisting us with any information, when they see suspicious people or activities in their localities,” he added.

Why East Africa’s Borders Are Blowing Up

Lines between countries used to have little importance in Africa’s most dynamic region. How times have changed.

August 7, 2014 (Foreign Policy) — In one short week in July, tension along East Africa’s borders yielded nearly 120 deaths and one nasty lawsuit — offering along the way vivid evidence of the dynamics that are shaping the region’s future.

On July 3, an anonymous farmer from the Gambella region on Ethiopia’s border with South Sudan began legal action in the British courts. The claimant accused the British government of complicity with its Ethiopian counterpart’s policy of forcibly relocating thousands of Ethiopians. On July 5, nearly 30 people were killed near the shores of the Indian Ocean during an attack on a village and police post close to Kenya’s border with Somalia. On the same day more than 90 people were killed during raids on police posts close to Uganda’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Read more…

It might seem churlish to criticise any effort to create a “win-win relationship for Africa, where US technology and finance helps release the latent potential of a continent which is home to six of the world’s fastest-growing economies. But if it’s such a great idea, and if Mr Obama is really dedicated to this cause, the question being whispered on the sidelines of this summit is: why did it take this long? Read more…

መልዕክት ለትግራዩ የወንበዴ ቡድን!

እናቴ በተፈጥሮዋ ቻይና ርኅሩኅ ናት። ሰሞኑን ግን ከወትሮዋ በተለያ መልኩ ማልቀሱን አብዝተዋለች።  እናቴ ‘Abdii koo’ በሚትለዋ አጭር ሀረግ ብቻ ደስታዋን ፣ ሀዘኗን ፣ ስስትዋን ፣ ጥልቅ የእናትነት ፍቅሯን ፣ ተስፋዋን ፣ ምክሯን ፣ ግሳፄዋን ፣ድካሟን ፣ ብርታቷን… ሁሉ ነገሯን ትገልጻለች። በቤት ዉስጥ የምንኖረዉ ሁለታችን ብቻ ነን ። ማታ ማታ እቤት ዉስጥ ቁጭ ስንል እኔ TVዉ ላይ ሳፈጥ እሷ ደግሞ በTVዉ ግርጌ  በተንጠለጠሉ ፎቶዎች ላይ ዐይኗን ተክላ ታሰላስላለች። አንደኛዉ ፎቶ ያባቴ ሲሆን ሌሎቹ የዘመድአዝማድ ፎቶዎች ናቸዉ። እናቴ ከፎቶዎቹ መካከል አንደኛዉን አተኩራ ባየች ቁጥር ዕንባዋን መቆጣጠር ይሳናትና ወደ ጓዳ ገብታ ታለቅሳለች። ተመልሳ ትመጣና ደግሞ እንዳልከፋ ልታረሳሳኝ ትጥራለች።

እንዳለመታደል ሆኖ ይህንን የናቴን መሪር ህይዋትና በቤተሰቤ ላይ የተጫነዉን አስከፊ ግጽታ ማጤን የጀመርኩት ገና ሕጻን እያለሁ ነበር። አባቴ በከተማዋ ስመጥር የህክምና ባለሙያ ነበሩ። በአንድ የመንግስት ሆስፒታል ዉስጥ ከሚሰጡት የህክምና አገልግሎት በተጨማሪ የግል ክሊኒክ ከፍተዉ በትርፍ ጊዜያቸዉ ለኀብረተሰቡ አገልግሎት ይሰጣሉ። አገልግሎታቸዉ ከሞላጎደል የነጻ ያህል ስለሆና አንዳንዴ የህክምና ቁሳቁስ መግዣ ወጪዎችን ከራሳቸዉ ኪስ ለመሸፈን ይገደዳሉ። እናም ቤተሰቡ ለክፉ ቀን እንኳ የሚሆን የመጠባበቂያ ገንዘብ የለዉም ነበር። ሆኖም ግን ቤተሰቡ በእጅጉ ደስተኛ ነዉ ማለት ይቻላል። Read more…
