Why East Africa’s Borders Are Blowing Up

Lines between countries used to have little importance in Africa’s most dynamic region. How times have changed.

August 7, 2014 (Foreign Policy) — In one short week in July, tension along East Africa’s borders yielded nearly 120 deaths and one nasty lawsuit — offering along the way vivid evidence of the dynamics that are shaping the region’s future.

On July 3, an anonymous farmer from the Gambella region on Ethiopia’s border with South Sudan began legal action in the British courts. The claimant accused the British government of complicity with its Ethiopian counterpart’s policy of forcibly relocating thousands of Ethiopians. On July 5, nearly 30 people were killed near the shores of the Indian Ocean during an attack on a village and police post close to Kenya’s border with Somalia. On the same day more than 90 people were killed during raids on police posts close to Uganda’s border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Read more…

August 6, 2014 (The Telegraph) — Barack Obama is having a big “jawl” at the White House for 45 African heads of state this week, as well as hosting three-day summit designed to kick-start a more fruitful relationship between American and African businesses, but questions are already being asked whether this unprecedented get-together will create more than a lot of Washington DC traffic jams.

It might seem churlish to criticise any effort to create a “win-win relationship for Africa, where US technology and finance helps release the latent potential of a continent which is home to six of the world’s fastest-growing economies. But if it’s such a great idea, and if Mr Obama is really dedicated to this cause, the question being whispered on the sidelines of this summit is: why did it take this long? Read more…

መልዕክት ለትግራዩ የወንበዴ ቡድን!

እናቴ በተፈጥሮዋ ቻይና ርኅሩኅ ናት። ሰሞኑን ግን ከወትሮዋ በተለያ መልኩ ማልቀሱን አብዝተዋለች።  እናቴ ‘Abdii koo’ በሚትለዋ አጭር ሀረግ ብቻ ደስታዋን ፣ ሀዘኗን ፣ ስስትዋን ፣ ጥልቅ የእናትነት ፍቅሯን ፣ ተስፋዋን ፣ ምክሯን ፣ ግሳፄዋን ፣ድካሟን ፣ ብርታቷን… ሁሉ ነገሯን ትገልጻለች። በቤት ዉስጥ የምንኖረዉ ሁለታችን ብቻ ነን ። ማታ ማታ እቤት ዉስጥ ቁጭ ስንል እኔ TVዉ ላይ ሳፈጥ እሷ ደግሞ በTVዉ ግርጌ  በተንጠለጠሉ ፎቶዎች ላይ ዐይኗን ተክላ ታሰላስላለች። አንደኛዉ ፎቶ ያባቴ ሲሆን ሌሎቹ የዘመድአዝማድ ፎቶዎች ናቸዉ። እናቴ ከፎቶዎቹ መካከል አንደኛዉን አተኩራ ባየች ቁጥር ዕንባዋን መቆጣጠር ይሳናትና ወደ ጓዳ ገብታ ታለቅሳለች። ተመልሳ ትመጣና ደግሞ እንዳልከፋ ልታረሳሳኝ ትጥራለች።

እንዳለመታደል ሆኖ ይህንን የናቴን መሪር ህይዋትና በቤተሰቤ ላይ የተጫነዉን አስከፊ ግጽታ ማጤን የጀመርኩት ገና ሕጻን እያለሁ ነበር። አባቴ በከተማዋ ስመጥር የህክምና ባለሙያ ነበሩ። በአንድ የመንግስት ሆስፒታል ዉስጥ ከሚሰጡት የህክምና አገልግሎት በተጨማሪ የግል ክሊኒክ ከፍተዉ በትርፍ ጊዜያቸዉ ለኀብረተሰቡ አገልግሎት ይሰጣሉ። አገልግሎታቸዉ ከሞላጎደል የነጻ ያህል ስለሆና አንዳንዴ የህክምና ቁሳቁስ መግዣ ወጪዎችን ከራሳቸዉ ኪስ ለመሸፈን ይገደዳሉ። እናም ቤተሰቡ ለክፉ ቀን እንኳ የሚሆን የመጠባበቂያ ገንዘብ የለዉም ነበር። ሆኖም ግን ቤተሰቡ በእጅጉ ደስተኛ ነዉ ማለት ይቻላል። Read more…

Obama Should Press African Leaders to End Repression

August 5, 2014, Washington, DC (HRW) – US President Barack Obama should ensure that human rights concerns are a major focus of the US-Africa Leaders Summit, Human Rights Watch said today. Rights concerns should not be relegated to meetings in the margins of the summit. The theme of the August 4-6, 2014 summit in Washington, DC, is “Investing in Our Future.”

The summit will host some 45 African heads of state, at least a dozen of whom lead repressive governments that have imprisoned journalists, human rights defenders, and anti-corruption campaigners. Many have approved laws that stifle freedom of expression and used national security, defamation, and anti-terrorism laws to prosecute independent writers, protesters, and activists who criticize government policy. Read more…

Ogaden Music Festival held in Norway

The powerful Ogaden diaspora communities held a musical festival in Oslo, Norway on Saturday ,August 2,2014, which hundreds of young men and young women participated in, in part of showing the World what identifies Ogaden Somalis as Somalis from Occupied-Ogaden region.

European Citizens of Occupied Ogaden native do not hold the music festival in protest of showing the globe their truer national identity that Ethiopian highlanders stolen 50 years ago after great Britain handed over Ogaden region to Ethiopia in 1954,without Somalis consent, but they hold and perform a traditional dance locally known as ‘Dhaanto’ for awareness to draw the international attention for the hidden genocide that is taking place in their homeland of Occupied-Ogaden region. Read more…

የመላው የኦሮሞ ህዝብ ጥያቄ የነጻነት ጥያቄ ነው:: ነጻ አእምሮ የሌለው ነጻ አስተሳሰብ የለውም:: ኢትዮጵያ ውስጥ የኦሮሞ ህዝብ መብት ተከብሮ አያውቅም:: የወያኔ መንግስት ፀረ ህዝብ፤ ፀረ ዲሞክራሲ፤ ፀረ ኦሮሞ ነው ብዬ ብገልጽ የአደባባይ ሃቅ ነው። አምባገነን ገዢዎች ኦሮሞን በነጻነቱ እንዲኖር ከመፍቀድ ይልቅ ለፖለቲካቸው መጠቀሚያ በማድረግ ጭቆናና ግፍ፣ እስራትና ሞት ከእለት ወደ እለት እያደረሱበት ይገኛሉ:: የኦሮሞ ህዝብ ሰለ ነጻነቱ መታገል ከጀመረ ብዙ አመታት ሆኖታል:: ዛሬም በትግል ላይ ነው:: የምንፈልገው ነጻነት እስኪመጣ ድረስ እንታገላለን:: የኦሮሞ ህዝብ ሰራተኛ፣ የተማረ፣ ሰው አክባሪ፣ አገሩን ለማሳደግ የሚደክም ህዝብ ነው:: የአሁኑ የወያኔ የዉስጥ ገዳይ የአገዛዝ ስልት ደግሞ የሰሚ ያለህ ብሎ የሚያስጮህ፣ የሚያስመርር ጉዳይ ነው። በአሁኑ ወቅትም በሃገር ዉስጥ በኦሮሞ ወጣቶች የሚደረግ የነፃነት ትግል እየጠነከረ በሚሄድበት ግዜ ሁሉ ወያኔ መነሻው የኦሮሞ ነፃ አውጪ ግንባር ነው በሚል በተለመደው የሂሳብ ስሌቱ የኦሮሞ ልጆችን እየገደለና እያፈሰ እስር ቤት ከማጎር አልፎ የኦሮሞን ህዝብ የነፃነት ጉዞ ለማዳከም የተለያዩ መርዛማ ዘዴዎችን በመጠቀም የኦሮሞ ህዝብንና የነፃነት ትግልን ለመለያየት ብሎ ለሰው ልጆች የማይገባን የጭካኔ ግፍ እየተገበረ ይገኛል። ኦነግ በኦሮሞ ህዝብ ዘንድ ድርጅት ብቻ ሳይሆን የኦሮሞ ህዝብ የማንነትም መገለጫ ነው:: በኢትዮጵያ የፀረ አሸባሪነት ህግ የወጣው በዋናነት ንፁሃን ህዝቦችን ከሽብር ለመከላከል ሲሆን የፀረ አሸባሪነት ህግ በወያኔ የወጣበት ዋናው ምክንያት ግን ንፁሀን የሆኑትን የኦሮሞ ልጆችንና ሌሎችንም ለማሸበር ታስቦ የወጣ መሆኑ ግልፅ ነው።በሌላ አነጋገር አለም የፀረ አሸባሪነትን ህግ የምትጠቀመው ንፁሃን ህዝቦች እንዳይሸበሩ ለመከላከል ሲሆን ወያኔ ግን ንጹሃን ህዝቦችን እራሱ እያሸበረበት ይገኛል።

በሀገር ውስጥ ከሚያደርሱት በደል በተጨማሪ የእነሱን የግፍ አገዛዝ በመሸሽ ወደ ጎረቤት ሀገራት ሄደው በፖለቲካ ጥገኝነት ተመዝግበው የሚኖሩትን የኦሮሞ ልጆች እንኳ በሰላም እንዳይኖሩ ባሉበት በማሳደድ የፀረ አሸባሪነት ህግን በሽፋን በመጠቀም ከጎረቤት መንግስታት ጋር ስምምነት ፈጥረው እጅ እግር አስረው በመመለስ የእድሜ ልክና የሞት ቅጣት ቀማሽ እንዲሆኑ እየተደረገ መሆኑ የዚህን ህግ አስከፊነትን ያመለክታል። እንደ ምሳሌነት ብናነሳ ተስፋሁን ጨመዳ እና መስፍን አበበ ከኬንያ የተያዙበት ዜዴና በወያኔ እስር ቤት ውስጥ የደረሰባቸው አሰቃቂ ግድያ መላውን የኦሮሞ ህዝብ ያስለቀሰ፣ ለበለጠ ትግል ያነሳሳ ጉዳይ ነው። በአሁኑ ግዜም በዚህ የወያኔ ፀረ ሽብር ህግ ምክንያት በጎረቤት ሀገራት በፖለቲካ ጥገኝነት የሚኖሩ የኦሮሞ ልጆች ተሰሚነት እያጡ በስጋት ውስጥ እየኖሩ መሆኑን በተደጋጋሚ እየሰማን ነው። ስለዚህ የኦሮሞ ህዝብ ጥያቄ እስኪመለስና ኦሮሞ በራሱ ሀገር ላይ የባለቤትነት መበቱን እስኪጎናፀፍ ድረስ ወያኔ ለግዜው እንዲሁ ይለፋል እንጂ የኦሮሞን የነፃነት ትግል ለማዳከምም ሆነ ለማጥፋት መላውን የኦሮሞን ህዝብ ካልጨረሰ በቀር መቼም እንደማይሳካለት ለማሳሰብ እወዳለሁ። አንድ ቀን እሮሞ ነፃ መውጣቱ ስለማይቀር ነፃነቱን ያገኘ ቀን ግን ግፈኞች ላደረሱት በደል ወንጀለኞቹን ከጥቅም አጨብጫቢዎቻቸው ጭምር በፍርድ እንደሚፋረዳቸው አንዳች ጥርጥር የለዉም::

As Washington prepares to host the first-ever U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit next week, American policy makers must acknowledge their contributions to this dismal situation. By lavishing billions of dollars in military and development aid on African states while failing to promote justice, democracy and the rule of law, American policies have fostered a culture of abuse and rebellion. Local EU statement on the situation in Ethiopia

July 31, 2014 (Delegation of the European Union to Ethiopia) – The European Union Delegation issues the following statement in  agreement with the EU Heads of Mission in Ethiopia:

“The EU Delegation is deeply concerned about developments in the case of the ten bloggers and journalists charged under the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation on 18 July, as well as recent arrests of opposition members. It calls on the Ethiopian authorities to ensure that proceedings are carried out according to the Ethiopian Constitution and respecting international and regional human rights standards, in particular granting access to legal counsel and family, as well as the right to apply for bail when applicable, and that the trial is transparent and free from political interference. Read more…
