Migrant group: 500 feared dead after boat rammed


LIBYA-ACCIDENT-IMMIGRATIONSeptember 15, 2014 (Associate Press) — About 500 Syrians, Palestinians, Egyptians and Sudanese are feared to have died after their boat was rammed and sank off the Malta coast last week, the International Organization for Migration said Monday.
The group of migrant workers was undertaking a perilous journey from the Egyptian port of Damietta, seeking a better life in Europe, when their boat was overtaken by human traffickers equipped with two vessels on Wednesday, said organization spokeswoman Christiane Berthiaume. Read more…

Eighteen illegal Ethiopians arrested in Meru trying to get to Nairobi

Eighteen illegal immigrants from Ethiopia were Sunday arrested Kiutine, Igembe North, Meru County on their way to Nairobi. “The illegal aliens were nabbed at a road block at Kiutine at 8am, aboard 2 saloon cars. They were heading to Nairobi.

We will take them to court, together with their two drivers, both Kenyans,” said Cornelius Sing’oei, the Igembe North OCPD.  He said the immigrants who are between 18 to 26 years and all men and could not speak English. “We know there are people living in Meru who are financing and coordinating the illegal immigrants’ entry into Kenya.
We are continuing with the investigations, but the arrested will be arraigned in court immediately,” said Mr. Sing’oei “We encourage the members of the public to continue assisting us with any information, when they see suspicious people or activities in their localities,” he added.
